Prince George’s County Public Schools fared well at the state championship track and field meet, as three schools took home titles. Bowie, Frederick Douglass and Henry A. Wise all won championships, with Bowie and Douglass’ boys teams coasting easily to victories, while Wise’s girls team tied for first with Magruder High School of Montgomery County.

The meet lasted May 22-24, with Thursday’s events featuring the preliminaries for most events. The meet carried over through Friday and finished Saturday evening.

Douglass coasted to the 2A championship, defeating second-place Century High School by 40.5 points. Senior Terrell Green led the way with victories in the 800 meter run and 1600 meter run. Green also placed third in the 3200 meter run.

Bowie also dominated in their class, defeating Thomas S. Wooton High School by 39 points. Led by Antonio Coleman, Maxwell Willis and Justin Beatty, Bowie took first in the 4 x 100, 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays. Willis also placed first in the 200 meter dash, while Coleman won the 400 meter dash.

Bowie junior Antonio Coleman flies around the final turn.

Wise’s girls squad tied for first behind the performances of Nicovia Carter, Alicia Colson and India Griffin. Colson and Griffin contributed points in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes. The two also teamed up with Dayonna Dixon and Kayla Truesdel to take second in the 4 x 100 relay and third in the 4 x 200 relay. Carter added 8 points with a second place finish in the shot put.

Other notable performances include Wise senior James Watts III winning the discus with a throw of 154′ 5″. Eleanor Roosevelt senior Banks Agaruwa placed second in the shot put after a 52′ 3″ toss.
